How to Calculate Credit Card Installment Fees
A card installment splits the payment amount (principal) across months, repaying equally each month while charging a fee (interest) on the remaining balance. So the first month has the largest balance and thus the largest fee, and the fee shrinks as the balance falls each period.
| Item | Formula |
|---|---|
| Monthly fee rate | annual fee rate / 12 |
| Monthly principal | payment amount / months |
| Period-n fee | (remaining balance) x monthly fee rate |
| Total installment fee | sum of each period's fee |
| Grand total | payment amount + total installment fee |
For example, paying ₩1,200,000 over 12 months at a 15% annual rate gives a monthly principal of ₩100,000, with a 1.25% monthly fee (15% / 12) on the shrinking balance. This works out to a total fee of about ₩97,000. Interest-free (0%) means no extra cost - you simply pay ₩100,000 each month.
Sometimes paying in full to get a discount beats installments, so compare with the lump-sum discount using the discount calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How are credit card installment fees calculated?
Generally the fee each month is the remaining balance times the monthly fee rate (annual rate / 12). Assuming equal principal repayment, the total fee is the sum across periods, proportional to the shrinking balance.
What is the difference between interest-free and interest-bearing installments?
An interest-free plan has a 0% fee rate, so you only split the payment with no extra cost. An interest-bearing plan usually carries about 10-20% annually, and the longer the term, the larger the total fee.
What is a typical installment fee rate?
It varies by card issuer, membership tier, and term, but is usually around 10-20% per year. Check the exact rate on your statement, the issuer's app, or customer service.
Does paying off early reduce the fee?
Yes. Because the fee is charged on the remaining balance, paying off early (prepayment) can reduce future fees. Note that issuers handle prepayment differently, so check the details.
